HAUS BAMENOHL

DEUTSCHE VERSION

As one can see from the cellar vaults and the two-meter walls on the ground floor, the castle dates back from the 14th Century. The family's archives contain a document of the year 1376, in which the castle is mentioned for the first time under adventurous circumstances. One of the owners was released from the prison in Attendorn shortly before and swore feud to the archbishop of Cologne.

1433 for the first time a member of the Plettenberg-family became owner of the manor house. At that time only the main building without the tower and the north-wing of today's castle was existing. Around the year 1600 the manor house and the surrounding estates were taken over by marriage by the Vogt of Elspe. Toward the end of the War of 30 Years, 1648, a second building was erected close to the main building, today's north wing. Both houses were surrounded by a pond and could be reached over a bridge.

Haus Bamenohl around 1650

Around 1800 the property turned to the Plettenberg-family for the second time , members of which are still living here today. Around 1850 both houses were connected. 1875 the pond was partly filled up and the tower was erected. Since that time no more modifications have been made to the outside shape of the castle.

After World War II Haus Bamenohl served first as accommodation for refugees, afterwards until 1965 as old people's home. At that time serious defects were discovered in the building's structure, which rendered further use impossible. In 1987 renovation and repair-works begun, that still persist at present and will take some more years to finish.
